Grandma's White Bread

This was my Grandma's recipe and I have fond memories of her baking bread!! My Grandma was a great cook and I spent many hours in the kitchen helping and watching her, and of course the best part... eating all of her creations!! When she made bread I loved watching the dough rise, smelling the yeast and then at last slathering butter all over a nice warm piece of bread fresh out of the oven!! I could eat a whole loaf in one sitting, definitely no gluten allergy!! To me this is pure and simple comfort!

Ingredients for 2 loaves:

1 ½ Cups water
½ Cup milk
3 Tablespoons sugar
2 Teaspoons salt
3 Tablespoons butter or lard

Yeast Mixture:

½ Cup lukewarm water
1 teaspoon sugar
1 Tablespoon dry yeast

51/2 -6 Cups all-purpose flour

In microwave or in a small pot on the stove scald the milk and water.

Stir in sugar, salt and butter. Cool mixture to lukewarm

Meanwhile, measure the yeast mixture ingredients into a small bowl, let stand for ten minutes.

Combine the yeast mixture with the milk/water mixture and stir well.

Beat in 2 Cups of the flour, then stir in the rest of the flour.

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead until the dough is smooth and elastic, approximately 8-10 minutes.

Place dough in a greased bowl, turning to grease the top of the dough. Cover lightly with plastic wrap and place in a warm draft free area of your kitchen until doubled in bulk, approximately 1 hour.

Punch dough down and place on a lightly floured surface.

Cover with a tea towel and let rest for 15 minutes.

Divide the dough into two loaf sized portions and shape into loaves.

Place in greased loaf pans.

Cover with a tea towel and let rise for about one hour until doubled in size.

Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

Bake in oven for approximately 25-30 minutes.

Remove from pans and cool on wire racks.

I have a bread machine that I make my dough with and then shape the dough into loaves and bake in the oven, it is so easy. Just follow the instructions for the dough cycle on your bread machine if you have one.

I use the dough cycle on my bread machine to make the dough as it is so nice to let the machine do all the work. If you do not have one just follow the directions in the recipe. Scald the milk and water in the microwave. Stir in all the sugar and salt. Remember to add the yeast water to the liquid as there is no need to start the yeast.

Stir in the butter.

Add flour and sprinkle instant yeast over the flour and set bread machine on dough cycle.

Remove dough from machine and place on a lightly floured surface.

Divide into two equal pieces.

Roll into a rectangle.

Form into a loaf.

Place into greased loaf pans.

Cover with a tea towel, until doubled in size.

Preheat oven to 400 degrees and bake for 25-30 minutes.

Remove bread from pans and cool on wire racks.
