Caramel Popcorn Twists

In Canada the Old Dutch potato chip company makes popcorn twists and a few years back we tried the recipe for caramel popcorn twists on the back of the bag and were we happy we did!! These are sweet and salty and hit all the right notes for a perfect treat. We usually make them at Christmas time but anytime is a good time if you ask us!!! We usually double the recipe.

Ingredients:
½ pound or 227 grams butter (NOT MARGARINE)
1 Cup brown sugar
½ Cup light corn syrup
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 175 gram bag of Old Dutch Popcorn Twists

Directions:
Preheat oven to 250 degrees.
Empty bag of popcorn twists into a large roaster pan.
In a 2 quart or 2 litre saucepan melt butter over medium heat, then add brown sugar and corn syrup.
Cook for 2 minutes.
Add baking soda to the mixture, stir. This will cause the mixture to foam up a little so that is why you need a little bit bigger of a pan.
Pour caramel mixture over the popcorn twists and stir until well coated.
Place in oven for approximately 45 minutes, stirring every 10-15 minutes.
Remove from oven and pour onto a large piece of wax paper, breaking up clumps so they are not all stuck together.
Enjoy!

Butter people....NOT margarine. Ain't nothing like the real thing!!!!!

Melt butter over medium heat. Be careful as butter burns quickly!

Add brown sugar and corn syrup.

Bring mixture to a boil over medium heat and cook for 2 minutes.

Add baking soda and stir.

Pour hot mixture over popcorn twists and stir well to coat. Bake for 45 minutes stirring every 10-15 minutes.

When ready dump popcorn twists onto counter top lined with wax paper, break apart clumps.

  1. If you cook the "sauce" on the stovetop to soft ball before adding the baking soda, you don't need to bake it. I always burn myself if I do the baking method so now I do all the cooking on the stovetop and it's still just as good. Yummy too on other things, like cinnamon Chex.
