Root Beer Ribs

These ribs are awesome!!!!! I got the recipe from Ted Reader, a professional grill king. These ribs take a little prep but are well worth it. The flavours are complex and make you want to keep coming back for more. Our family licks these up in a New York minute!!


BBQ Spice:
½ Cup paprika
¼ chilli powder
3 Tablespoons salt
2 Tablespoons ground coriander
2 Tablespoons garlic powder
2 Tablespoons curry powder
2 Tablespoons dry mustard powder
1 Tablespoon black pepper
1 Tablespoon dried basil
1 Tablespoon dried thyme
1 tablespoon ground cumin
1 tablespoon cayenne

4 racks pork baby back ribs (1 ½ lb. each)or equivalent depending on the size of the ribs you purchase.
6 Tablespoons BBQ spice
3 onions, sliced
6 cloves of garlic, smashed
3-4 cans (375ml) A&W Root Beer
1 Tablespoon vanilla

BBQ Basting Sauce:
1 Cup Ketchup
½ Cup brown sugar
½ Cup root beer
2 Tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro
2 tablespoons water
1 Tablespoon worcestershire sauce
salt to taste

Directions for BBQ Spice:
Make BBQ spice. Store in a airtight container in a cool. dry place away from direct heat and light.

Directions for Ribs:
Preheat oven to 325 degrees
Score the membrane on the backside of the ribs into a diamond pattern.
Season ribs with BBQ spice.
Spread onions and garlic in a large roasting pan.
Lay ribs over onions.
Pour root beer and vanilla in pan. Cover pan with a lid or tin foil.
Braise for about 2 hours until meat is tender but not fall off the bone tender.Remove from pan. Ribs can be wrapped in foil and stored in fridge until you are ready to BBQ.
Preheat BBQ to medium high. Grill ribs 6-8 minutes a side. Basting with the BBQ sauce.
Cut between every third rib and serve.

Combine all the spices. This rub can be stored in a airtight container. Makes more than what you will use for this recipe.

Line roasting pan with onions and garlic.


The secret ingredient.
Score membrane on bake side of ribs in a diamond pattern.
Rub spice mixture on both sides of ribs.

Place ribs in pan meat side down, pour root beer in pan. Cook ribs covered in 325 degree oven for 2 hours.

Make BBQ sauce.


When ribs are finished cooking in oven, remove and when ready grill meat on BBQ 6-8 minutes per side basting with BBQ sauce.
